Around 1 in 7 couples experience difficulties with conception. Acupuncture is frequently chosen to improve natural fertility or to increase the chances of a positive result with IVF and other Assisted Reproduction Therapies. Acupuncture may help regulate menstual cycles, improve blood flow to the reproductive organs, balance hormones and counteract the effects of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). It can be used to enhance the functioning of the body as a whole, calm anxiety and improve overall wellbeing.
Many clinical trials to date suggest that acupuncture may be useful in the embryo transfer stage of in vitro fertilisation and resulting in an increased pregnancy rate and a greater number of live births.
Acupuncture may help in the treatment of infertility by regulating fertility hormones which can become imbalanced as a result of stress and other factors; increasing blood flow to the reproductive organs which can improve the thickness of the endometrial lining and so increasing the chances of embryo implantation; increasing egg production and improving oocyte quality which could increase the chance of fertilisation; enhancing luteal function; regulating follicle stimulation hormone-receptor expression; normalising cortisol and prolactin levels on IVF medication days and thereby reducing stress and promoting embryo implantation.
